Grasslands for the ecological intensification of livestock farming

Partner regional nature parks: Livradois-Forez, Vercors

INRAE departments and units: ACT, ECODIV and PHASE for the Lessem, SADAPT, Dynafor and Selmet units

The aim of the MOUVE project was to study the conditions, forms and implications of the ecological intensification of herbivore farming, particularly in mountain areas such as those of the Livradois-Forez and Vercors Regional Natural Parks, which face the dual challenge of agricultural profitability and biodiversity conservation. The goal is to enable livestock farming systems to achieve high performance while reducing their environmental impact and ensuring that ecosystems are sustainably managed.

Against this backdrop, the MOUVE project has been able to highlight the importance of permanent grassland, both in terms of fodder self-sufficiency and the resilience of livestock farms to unforeseen events, as well as in terms of operating flexibility. On the Vercors plateau, there was some controversy surrounding the intensification of livestock farming and grassland practices, sometimes due to farmers’ lack of awareness of their importance in fodder production. The project has enabled training courses to be set up for farmers, based on visits to plots of land. The importance of permanent grassland, its diversity and composition, the way it functions and its value in terms of livestock production were all shared, leading to a change in the way these systems are viewed. This applied research work has enriched the region’s approaches and views during the “Prairies fleuries” (flower meadow) competition, now known as the “agroecological practices competition”, which has become a tool to highlight the role of permanent grassland in livestock farming.
