Supporting the transition to sustainable forest management

Partner RNPs: Haut-Languedoc, Pays d’Epinal

INRAE departments and units: ECODIV-UMR Silva

The S’EnTET project has brought together a number of human and social science disciplines to analyse and support the transition to sustainable forest management in local areas. Sustainable management solutions need to be adapted to the local area, its history, the governance in place and its human resources. The players, political decision-makers, elected representatives of forest communities and managers involved in these solutions do not all have the same answers to offer. Transitions must therefore be flexible and adaptable.

The project tested flexible and adaptable modes of transition in three forest areas: the Haut-Languedoc RNP, the Pays d’Épinal and the Parc national de forêts.

Through qualitative geographical and ethnographic surveys and participatory workshops, the study addressed three aspects: the profile of the individuals and organisations involved, the effect of local governance on stakeholder involvement, and providing local stakeholders with knowledge and innovation tools to guide them in their choices of public action.

The study will publish its findings in a variety of formats for use by public decision-makers (policy briefs), the scientific community and the general public.
