The territory of the Scarpe-Escaut Regional Natural Park is mainly peri-urban and its natural habitats are largely made up of wetlands classified as being of national interest, grasslands and forests. The Biodiversa-Imagine project and a thesis on the evaluation of ecosystem services using the capacity matrix method have made it possible to assess the ecosystem services provided by these wetlands, their sustainability and their use by humans.

Using the innovative approach of ecosystem capacity matrices – a graphical representation that cross-references ecosystem services and ecosystem typology – the thesis work enabled the ecosystem services of wetlands to be represented in various forms. These were then used in several plans and programmes (SCoT, SAGE, Ramsar application, Marchiennes peat bog RNN classification file, etc.) and were used to produce awareness-raising tools such as the park’s website. This work has mobilised local authorities, nature protection associations and managers to preserve wetlands and restore the ecological network.

The Biodiversa-Imagine project has led to further innovation by taking into account the issue of ecosystem services in managing the park. The park’s various actors (foresters, watercourse managers, etc.) have been able to meet and raise awareness of their respective problems, thereby encouraging collaboration. Built with the stakeholders, these two projects have produced a representation of the ecosystem services of wetlands that can be used by park managers. These results are already of interest to the Baie de Somme and Brière parks, as well as the Hauts-de-France regional directorate for the environment, development, Philippe Paternolli and housing (DREAL).
