Fabrizio Botta Deputy, Head of the national phytopharmacovigilance system at Anses (testimonial from the dossier “Info&Sols, a partnership system for soil knowledge and monitoring in France” – 2024)

“Since 2015, the Anses has been running a national phytopharmacovigilance system, the only one of its kind in Europe. This system provides a wealth of data on the presence of plant protection products residues in the environment, exposure and their possible effects on living organisms and ecosystems. All this information is used to alert people to high-risk exposure and to ensure that measures are taken to remedy the situation. We commissioned the PhytoSol prospective study from the GIS Sol, via its Réseau de Mesure de la Qualité des Sols (RMQS). This gives Anses access to invaluable data on the presence of residues in soils, cross-referenced with crop surveys conducted among farmers. These data are used to assess plant protection products in France, in the form of summary fact sheets, each dedicated to an active substance.”

Info&Sols, un dispositif partenarial pour la connaissance et la surveillance des sols en France
Info&Sols, a partnership-based system for understanding and monitoring soil in France

At the interface with water, air, rock and living organisms, soils are living, fragile environments that need to be preserved. They are at the heart of crucial global issues for the planet and for our own survival. However, over 60% of Europe’s soil is degraded. This dossier looks at the establishment of a soil knowledge and monitoring system in France, the public policies that have benefited from these scientific advances and the emerging issues surrounding soil.
