“The Association Départementale d’Économie Montagnarde de la Drôme (ADEM) helps to support and develop pastoral activities. In 2014, our study on the evolution of predation confirmed the increase in wolf attacks suffered by livestock farmers and shepherds in the area. ADEM therefore joined the Maploup scheme, run by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (AURA) pastoral network and USAPR, to provide better support for professionals and elected representatives. The Atlas section of Maploup is an objective knowledge tool that allows you to track changes in predation at a glance. At ADEM, we have been able to put a figure on a 43% increase in attacks between 2019 and 2020. This type of contextualisation data enables us to fine-tune our technical support for farmers, shepherds and elected representatives to ensure that pastoralism, which is so important in our region, continues to thrive. In the Drôme, small sheep and cattle farms contribute to agriculture and maintain the areas between mountain pastures and farms. Working to maintain them is therefore a major challenge.”

Facilitating territorial management through information systems
Data and information systems are a strategic interface used by both public policy and research. They provide a multi-faceted approach to issues of sustainable regional development, and are therefore a useful decision-making tool. Many INRAE teams are contributing to their development and use in research and in support of public policy. This is particularly true of the LESSEM research unit in Grenoble, which has developed the SIDDT territorial information system for enhanced territorial diagnosis, and the Maploup mapping and alert tool for stakeholders in pastoralism in mountain areas.
