Eric Houdeau has devoted his research to the effect of complex substances on the animal and human intestine. His team at Toxalim has demonstrated that certain substances such as bisphenol modify the permeability of the intestinal wall and its immune capacity. In the 2010s, the health authorities approached his team to find out more about the potential effect of nanoparticles in human food. Titanium dioxide, a food additive with a nanoparticle fraction, was chosen to understand the fate and effects on human health of these ingested nanoparticles. The results led to the provisional suspension of its use in food in France.
